If Fit, I will Play, No Rush to Retire, Says Glenn Maxwell
Australia’s experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is in no hurry to end his T20 International career. The 37-year-old has said he is still targeting the 2028 T20 World Cup as well as the Los Angeles Olympics.
Speaking to reporters in Melbourne, Maxwell said, “I don’t want to make any decisions about the future right now. I’ll see what happens over the next 12 months before making the right call. There’s no reason to rush. I’ll assess how my body feels and what I’m capable of on the field, and if the opportunity comes, I’ll try to give my best.”
He believes his contribution should not be judged solely by runs or wickets. “It’s about how active I feel on the field and how I’m experiencing the game. During the World Cup, I felt fitter and was able to make a strong impact in matches. That makes me believe I can still play an important role for the team.”
While optimistic about his T20 future, Maxwell remains cautious. “If I stay fit and prepared, hopefully I’ll get opportunities. I haven’t set any specific timeline. Right now, my main judge is my body and how I feel about my game.”
Australia’s next T20 assignment is a three-match series on their tour of Bangladesh. Maxwell confirmed that he remains in regular discussions with the selectors. “If my body is in good shape and I’m available, I’ll be ready to play.”
He will also continue to stay active in franchise cricket. Maxwell has renewed his contract with the Melbourne Stars for two more years and is set to play in the Pakistan Super League for the first time with Hyderabad Kings. In addition, he plans to feature in Major League Cricket and a new Europe-based T20 tournament.
For Maxwell, retirement is clearly not on the immediate horizon. Depending on his fitness and form, he hopes to continue contributing to both international and franchise cricket.
