Australia Cricket Team Faces Injury Setbacks Ahead of Champions Trophy

In a major blow ahead of the Champions Trophy, the Australian cricket team has received some concerning news. Steve Smith, who was set to lead the team in the absence of regular Test captain Pat Cummins, has suffered an elbow injury just a month before the tournament.

On Friday, during a Big Bash League match, Smith sustained the injury while throwing the ball. Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that Smith will join the Australian Test squad in Dubai later this week after consulting with medical experts. However, if he is unable to play due to the injury, Travis Head will step in as the captain for the first time.

In another setback, Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the Sri Lanka tour due to increasing pain in his left ankle. Cricket Australia issued a statement saying that Cummins, the captain for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, will be closely monitored. The Aussie skipper is expected to consult specialists for rehabilitation this week.

On a positive note, left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, who had been sidelined due to a thumb injury sustained earlier in the Big Bash League, has made progress in his recovery. Kuhnemann, named in the Australian Test squad for the Sri Lanka series, is expected to resume bowling this week. While he has no issues with his bowling hand, concerns remain over his batting and fielding abilities.

Australia is set to play their final World Test Championship match against Sri Lanka. However, the team has already secured their place in the final, despite these injury concerns.
