India Take 2-0 Series Lead After Beating New Zealand

India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in a thrilling second T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten half-century from Tilak Varma and explosive batting from Nitish Kumar Reddy. With this victory, the visitors have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

Chasing a target of 181 on Saturday, India found themselves in serious trouble at one stage. They lost five wickets for just 70 runs in the 11th over, raising fears of a defeat. However, the world champions staged a remarkable comeback, scoring 68 runs in the final 4.5 overs to seal a thrilling victory with one ball to spare.

Tilak Varma was the hero of India’s memorable win, remaining unbeaten on 51 off just 26 balls. Providing him with excellent support, Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 26 off 13 deliveries and hit the winning runs. India had also won the opening match of the series by four wickets at the same venue.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner triggered India’s early collapse, claiming four crucial wickets for just 21 runs. He dismissed centurion opener Abhishek Sharma for 27 and Naman Dhir for 31, putting India on the back foot. However, Tilak turned the match around in the final over by taking on Nathan Smith and smashing consecutive boundaries.

Earlier, New Zealand posted 180 runs after a brilliant partnership between Glenn Phillips and Bevon Jacobs. Having lost three wickets for 41 runs, the hosts recovered through a 116-run stand for the fourth wicket. Phillips scored 70 off 43 balls, including four sixes, while Jacobs contributed 58 off 46 deliveries. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was India’s most successful bowler, taking two wickets for 33 runs.

The two teams will meet in the third T20I on Tuesday in Wellington.
