West Indies took the field against India in a crucial Super 8 clash, but by the end of the match, the spotlight had shifted to a six-hitting battle where Caribbean batters created new history.
Shimron Hetmyer played a brief yet explosive cameo against India in Kolkata. Scoring 27 off just 12 balls, he smashed two sixes. That took his total tally of sixes in the ongoing T20 World Cup to 19 — the highest ever in a single edition of the tournament.
The contest, however, had been brewing since the start of the tournament. Earlier, West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran had set the record with 17 sixes in one edition. Hetmyer equalled that mark during his 85-run knock against Zimbabwe, where he struck seven sixes. Later, Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan moved to the top of the list with 18 sixes in six innings, including five during his century against Sri Lanka. But following Pakistan’s exit from the tournament, he was unable to hold on to the top spot.
In the same match against India, West Indies captain Rovman Powell also achieved a significant milestone. His unbeaten 34 off 19 balls included two sixes, helping him become West Indies’ highest six-hitter in international T20 cricket. In 117 matches, Powell has now struck 150 sixes, surpassing Pooran’s previous record of 149 sixes in 106 matches.
One match, two separate records. This personal milestone battle once again highlighted the powerful batting legacy of the Caribbean side.
