Storm from Bethell after Samson, India reach final after dramatic battle
India stormed into the T20 World Cup final with a thrilling 7-run win over England in a run-fest of a semifinal. After posting a massive 253 for 7 in 20 overs, India set England a daunting target of 254. In reply, England managed 246 for 7 in their allotted overs but ultimately fell just short despite coming close to a remarkable chase.
The hero of India’s innings was Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed a blistering 89 off just 42 balls, laying the foundation for India’s huge total. Following his unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in the previous match, Samson delivered another crucial knock, striking boundaries and sixes at will. Shivam Dube also contributed with an effective 43. For England, Will Jacks picked up two wickets.
England suffered an early setback in the chase, losing three key wickets inside the powerplay and coming under heavy pressure. However, young batter Jacob Bethell brought the match alive with a sensational innings. He blasted 105 off just 48 balls, keeping England firmly in the hunt.
Bethell and Will Jacks then stitched together an impressive 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Had that stand lasted longer, the result might have been different. But India’s bowlers held their nerve at the death and produced disciplined bowling to swing the momentum back. England needed 30 runs in the final over, which proved too much to achieve.
Fielding also played a decisive role in the match. In the third over of India’s innings, Harry Brook dropped a simple catch of Samson when he was on just 15. Samson made the most of that reprieve and went on to play a match-defining knock. On the other hand, Axar Patel took two stunning catches on the boundary to dent England’s chances.
Overall, India delivered effective performances with bat, ball, and in the field to secure a dramatic victory and book their place in the T20 World Cup final.
