India Ahead on Statistics as Ahmedabad Hosts Title Clash
India and New Zealand face each other today in the final of the T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. In cricket history, these two teams are the first to meet in the final of an ICC event across all three formats. Earlier, they faced each other in the finals of the 2021 World Test Championship and the 2025 Champions Trophy.
India and New Zealand have played each other 30 times in T20 cricket. India have won 18 matches, while New Zealand have won 11, with one match ending in a tie. At home, India have won 11 of the 15 encounters. In their most recent T20 meeting on 31 January, India posted 271/5 in 20 overs and secured a 46-run victory, sealing the series 4–1.
However, India are yet to beat New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. The two sides have faced each other three times in the tournament, with India losing all three matches. Their last meeting in a T20 World Cup was in 2021 in Dubai. Batting first, India managed only 110/7 in 20 overs, and New Zealand chased down the target in just 14.3 overs.
India have played 10 T20 matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, winning seven of them. Their highest score at this venue is 234/4, which came against New Zealand in 2023. In that match, Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten 126.
However, there is also a concern for Indian fans. Since November 2023, India have lost only two matches in ICC tournaments, and both defeats came at this very venue in Ahmedabad.
One of India’s biggest recent heartbreaks was the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament but eventually lost the final to Australia.
In the ongoing T20 World Cup, India have lost only one match so far, and that defeat also came in Ahmedabad against South Africa.
