Impact of International Break: Decline for Bangladeshi Batters in T20 Rankings
Bangladesh’s absence from international T20 cricket since December has begun to reflect in the ICC rankings. In the latest updated list, the batting department has suffered a downturn, although there has been slight relief in the bowling rankings. The decline of several batters in the standings has emerged as a cause for concern for Bangladesh.
In the batting rankings, Tanzid Hasan Tamim has slipped one place to 18th. Parvez Hossain Emon and Saif Hassan have also dropped one spot each and are now placed 39th and 40th respectively. While Towhid Hridoy has managed to retain his position at 42nd, Bangladesh’s T20 captain Litton Das has fallen one place to 47th. Poor form has further affected Jaker Ali, who has slipped one position and is now ranked 72nd.
While the batting unit shows signs of stagnation, the bowling department presents a slightly different picture. Mustafizur Rahman, who has been at the center of discussions and criticism in recent weeks following his exclusion from the IPL, has moved up one place in the rankings. In the latest ICC T20 bowlers’ rankings, he now sits seventh with a rating of 665 points. Amid various speculations, his performances have found recognition through the rankings.
However, Mustafizur is the only Bangladeshi bowler in the top ten. Sheikh Mehedi Hasan follows him, having slipped one place to 14th. Leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has climbed one spot to reach 17th. These three are currently the only Bangladeshi bowlers featured in the top 20.
Regular squad member Nasum Ahmed is ranked 26th. Tanzim Hasan Sakib has improved by one place to move up to 35th, while Taskin Ahmed—who has endured injuries and long breaks from cricket—finds himself at 53rd.
Overall, the latest rankings reflect the current reality of Bangladesh’s T20 side. While the lack of international matches and fluctuations in form have impacted the batters, there are some positive signs among the bowlers. With international fixtures set to resume, bouncing back in the rankings now stands as a major challenge for Bangladesh.
