South Africa strengthened their position in the third Test against Australia at Newlands in Cape Town, thanks to a brilliant century from all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. The Proteas were bowled out for 387 in their second innings on the fourth day, setting Australia a target of 288 runs for victory.

In reply to South Africa’s first-innings total of 329, Australia had scored 429 to take a 100-run lead. The hosts came under pressure in their second innings after losing five wickets for 181 runs. However, Wiaan Mulder and Ryan Rickelton rescued the side with a solid 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

Mulder remained unbeaten on 115 off 221 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and four sixes. It was his fourth Test century.

At the other end, Ryan Rickelton also produced a responsible batting performance to reach his century. However, he was run out following a misunderstanding with Mulder, bringing his innings to an end. It was the third century of his 18-Test career. Earlier in the day, Matthew Breetzke also made a valuable contribution of 43 runs. Among the Australian bowlers, Mitchell Starc claimed three wickets for 65 runs, while captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon also picked up wickets.

At the end of the day, Australia need 288 runs to win, while South Africa require 10 wickets to secure victory. With the Newlands pitch expected to offer additional assistance to spinners on the fifth day, the final day promises an exciting battle between bat and ball.
