Shakib Al Hasan hints at political comeback, reaffirms loyalty to Awami League
Bangladesh star all-rounder and former captain Shakib Al Hasan has once again drawn attention beyond cricket after speaking about his political future and continued loyalty to the Awami League. While he believes his playing career is not yet over, Shakib expressed his desire to return to politics after ending his cricketing journey. He also made it clear that if he does re-enter politics, it will be under the banner of the Awami League.
In an interview with BDNews24, Shakib spoke about his political stance and party commitment, saying,
“I am supposed to be committed to the Awami League, right? I don’t have the desire, interest, or habit of changing parties. I have never done that. Okay?”
Clarifying his long-standing position on political loyalty, he further explained that he has always remained faithful to any organisation he has been associated with and has never switched sides. He said,
“If I have ever put my name in even a small group, I have always remained loyal to that group. I don’t have the habit of switching sides.”
Referring to the current situation of the Awami League, which is now banned from political activities, Shakib expressed his belief that such a condition cannot last forever and will eventually change. He commented,
“Now it is banned, but does that mean it will be banned forever? Can anyone ban someone forever? This is a democratic right of the people. You cannot suppress a large section of the country.”
He also added that keeping a political party’s activities suspended does not contribute positively to the country’s progress or political environment. He said,
“Yes, you can temporarily stop or suppress something for as long as possible. But I don’t think there is any real development or benefit for politics or the country in doing that.”
