Monty Desai has been appointed as the head coach of the Canada national cricket team. The experienced coach, who has previously guided emerging teams like Nepal and Afghanistan to success, now carries the responsibility of reviving Canadian cricket. He takes over at a turbulent time, with Canada cricket going through a significant crisis.

The duration of his contract has not yet been officially disclosed. Canada suffered defeats in all four of their group matches in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, losing comprehensively to Afghanistan, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Alongside poor on-field performances, off-field issues have also added to the team’s troubles. Reports suggest that the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has launched an investigation into one of Canada’s matches in the recent T20 World Cup, further damaging the country’s cricketing image.

In this challenging period, the cricket board has placed its trust in Monty Desai. Cricket Canada President Arvind Khosa said in a statement, “Our primary goal is to restore Cricket Canada’s lost pride through performance and professionalism. The appointment of Monty Desai reflects that renewed vision. His experience working with associate nations like Nepal and Afghanistan gives us confidence that he can take the team to new heights through leadership and discipline.”

Monty Desai also expressed optimism after taking charge. He said, “It is an honour to take on this role. I have a clear understanding of the potential within Canadian cricket. Just as teams like Nepal and Afghanistan have proven themselves on the global stage through belief and discipline, Canada has the same opportunity. My goal will be to build a culture that brings consistency in performance on the field.”
