Australia has announced their squad for the Sydney Test, starting Friday, without Mitchell Marsh, who has been dropped due to his prolonged poor form. This decision was confirmed by Australian captain Pat Cummins. Marsh has been replaced by another pace-bowling all-rounder, Beau Webster.
While announcing the squad, Cummins said, "Mitchell Marsh has not been able to deliver the expected runs or wickets. We felt that it is time for him to take a break and recharge. Beau Webster has been in excellent form, and we believe this is the right time to give him a chance. It is unfortunate for Mitch because we know how much he can contribute to the team, but we feel it is the right time to bring Beau in."
In the series against India, Marsh scored only 73 runs in the first four Tests, averaging just 10.42. With the ball, he has not been able to find success either, taking only 3 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy's four matches. This is the main reason behind his exclusion.
On the other hand, Beau Webster, who is waiting for his debut, has had an impressive run in the Sheffield Shield last season, scoring 938 runs at an average of 59 and taking 30 wickets.
Australia XI for the fifth Test: Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland
