Following a week-long suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, many foreign players chose to return home citing security concerns. However, Punjab Kings stood out by retaining almost all their overseas players in India—thanks largely to the efforts of their head coach and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Punjab Kings CEO Satish Menon, in an interview with Times of India, revealed that Ponting played a pivotal role in ensuring the team's stability during the crisis.

“As soon as the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was announced, Ponting deboarded his flight to Australia and immediately began convincing our overseas players who were still in India to stay on. We are confident of having five foreign players—Marco Jansen, Josh Inglis, Marcus Stoinis, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Xavier Bartlett—available when the IPL resumes.”

Marco Jansen, who had already begun his return journey to South Africa, is currently in Dubai, and the team is optimistic about his return as well.

“Jansen is in Dubai now and is expected to rejoin us soon,” Menon added.

In addition, Mitchell Owen, an Australian batter, will join the Punjab Kings as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell. Owen was playing for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and is currently in Dubai awaiting clearance from the BCCI to join the squad.

The IPL was suspended after a floodlight failure and rising tensions during a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala. Following the announcement of a ceasefire at the border, the BCCI has resumed discussions to restart the tournament.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla commented:

“No final decision has been made yet. BCCI officials, including the secretary and the governing council chairman, are working closely to resume the league as soon as possible.”

On the field, Punjab Kings are in strong form, sitting third on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches. With three games left in the group stage, their path to the playoffs looks promising.
