A bizarre moment in last night’s IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad has sparked widespread controversy, as Ishan Kishan walked off the field without being dismissed—and without the fielding team even appealing.
The incident occurred in the first delivery of the third over during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s innings. Deepak Chahar bowled a delivery down the leg side that seemed to miss Kishan’s bat and pads, eventually landing safely in the gloves of wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton. The ball had clearly gone past leg stump and appeared to be heading wide.
Kishan, attempting a leg glance, missed the ball completely. No appeal was made by either Rickelton or Chahar, and yet, to the surprise of everyone, Kishan walked off toward the dressing room. Umpire Vinod Seshan, visibly confused, seemed ready to call a wide but, seeing Kishan depart voluntarily, raised his finger to declare him out.
Replays added fuel to the confusion. The UltraEdge (Snickometer) showed there was no contact between bat and ball. Kishan was not out. However, he neither consulted the umpire nor opted for a Decision Review System (DRS) check—something that could have clearly saved him.
The unexpected dismissal has led to an outcry on social media. Many fans and cricket pundits have criticized the umpiring, while others have raised eyebrows at Kishan’s decision not to review. Some even floated wild allegations, suggesting possible foul play.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Only the umpire and Ishan Kishan seemed to remember the script. Any match involving Mumbai, Chennai, or Rajasthan feels like it’s fixed to the core!”
Such reactions have reignited debates about umpiring standards in the IPL and the integrity of certain matches. While there is no evidence supporting claims of match-fixing, the incident has undeniably left a stain on what should have been just another routine dismissal—or, in this case, a non-dismissal.
As the controversy unfolds, the IPL governing council and match officials may be compelled to issue a statement or review the incident to address the concerns of fans and players alike.
