Zimbabwe Dominate Opening Day as Bangladesh Collapse for 191 in Sylhet Test
Bangladesh's return to Test cricket in 2025 began on a disappointing note as the hosts were bundled out for just 191 on the first day of the Sylhet Test against Zimbabwe. Despite winning the toss and opting to bat, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side failed to withstand Zimbabwe’s disciplined bowling attack and could only survive a little over 61 overs.
Zimbabwe seized full control of the day, not just with the ball but also with the bat. Openers Brian Bennett and Ben Curran provided a solid start, taking the visitors to 67 for no loss at stumps, trailing by just 124 runs with all ten wickets in hand.
Bangladesh’s batting lineup showed promise in patches, but none of the top or middle-order batters could convert their starts into a significant innings. Shanto, Mominul, and others got going but faltered before reaching substantial scores. Blessing Muzarabani and Wellington Masakadza shared the bowling honors, each claiming three wickets.
In reply, Zimbabwe's openers looked untroubled in the final session. Bennett remained unbeaten on 40, while Curran was not out on 17, as Bangladesh bowlers failed to pose any real threat.
The day ended with Zimbabwe firmly in control, leaving Bangladesh under pressure going into Day 2. With all ten wickets intact and momentum on their side, Craig Ervine’s men will look to push ahead on Saturday.
