Kirti Azad Wins in West Bengal's Bardhaman-Durgapur Constituency in Lok Sabha Election

In the Lok Sabha elections of India, Kirti Azad contested from the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency in West Bengal on a ticket from the Trinamool Congress. His main opponent was the former West Bengal state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Dilip Ghosh.

Today, on June 4th, the official results were announced, and Kirti Azad emerged victorious. He received 720,667 votes. His nearest rival, Dilip Ghosh, received 582,686 votes.

Kirti Azad won by a margin of 137,981 votes and will go to Parliament as a member of the Lok Sabha.

Kirti Azad's father, Bhagwat Jha Azad, was a freedom fighter in India's independence movement. He was renowned as a politician, having served as the Chief Minister of Bihar, a Member of the Lok Sabha, and held responsibilities in the Union Ministry.

Before his political career, Kirti Azad was a well-known cricketer. He played 7 Test matches and 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India. A right-handed batsman, Kirti Azad also bowled off-spin. He was a member of the Indian team that won the World Cup in 1983.

In politics, Kirti Azad initially became a Lok Sabha member for the BJP. Later, he contested elections for the Indian National Congress but was defeated. In November 2021, he joined Mamata Banerjee's party, the Trinamool Congress.
