Pacer Gus Atkinson has been given a rest for the ODI series against Australia, with Ollie Stone called up as his replacement. The decision comes as a result of concerns over Atkinson’s workload, having taken 34 wickets in his first six Tests, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
England has decided to rest Atkinson from their 50-over squad as they prepare to face Australia later this month.
Atkinson made a notable debut last July at Lord’s against the West Indies, taking 12 wickets and impressing everyone. To date, he has accumulated a total of 34 wickets in six Tests.
The England management has chosen to rest Atkinson for the five ODIs against Australia, with Ollie Stone joining the squad in his place.
England is scheduled to tour Pakistan at the end of September, followed by a trip to New Zealand in November for three Tests. With Mark Wood sidelined for the rest of the year due to an elbow injury, the England team management is keen to avoid any risk with Atkinson.
England ODI squad to play Australia: Jos Buttler (capt), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, John Turner
