South Africa began their Super Eight campaign in the T20 World Cup with an 18-run victory over the United States in Antigua. This win marks their fifth consecutive victory in the tournament, showcasing the Proteas' dominance.
Despite Quinton de Kock being named Player of the Match, Kagiso Rabada's exceptional bowling performance stole the show. Rabada bowled a sensational 19th over, conceding only two runs. Although Andries Gous remained unbeaten with 80 runs, it wasn't enough for the USA.
Chasing a target of 195 set by South Africa, the USA fought until the final over. They needed 28 runs from the last two overs after scoring 22 in the previous over. However, Rabada's brilliant bowling in the 19th over turned the tide. He dismissed the crucial Harmeet Singh, who was on 38 from 22 balls, with his first delivery. Rabada then delivered two dot balls and gave away only two runs in the final three balls, effectively sealing the match for South Africa.
The USA finished their innings at 176 for 6, falling short by 18 runs. With this thrilling victory, Aiden Markram's team started the Super Eight stage on a high note, continuing their unbeaten streak from the league stage. Despite Andries Gous's unbeaten 80, decorated with five sixes and an equal number of fours, the USA couldn't secure the win.
Earlier, after losing the toss and being asked to bat, South Africa had a shaky start, losing opener Reeza Hendricks early. However, the scenario quickly changed as captain Aiden Markram joined Quinton de Kock at the crease. The duo's aggressive batting added 110 runs to the scoreboard. Markram was dismissed for 46, followed by David Miller, who was out for a golden duck.
Quinton de Kock's explosive innings saw him scoring 74 off 40 balls before being dismissed. Heinrich Klaasen's quickfire 36 and Tristan Stubbs's 20 runs in the final overs helped South Africa post a formidable total of 194 runs.
