Tamim to Face Election Battle in BCB Polls, Nannu Also in the Race

The battle for positions on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) board of directors is heating up ahead of the upcoming election. Following the publication of the final list of candidates, it has become clear that current BCB president Tamim Iqbal will have to secure his place through a direct vote. Former national captain Minhajul Abedin Nannu is also set to contest in a competitive election.

According to the list released by the election commission, 18 valid nominations have been accepted for 12 director posts in the club category, indicating a fierce contest in this segment. Tamim Iqbal’s nomination has been approved as the representative of Old DOHS Sports Club, meaning he must win the election to retain his position as a director.

The Chattogram division is also expected to witness a closely fought contest. Although there are two director positions available from the division, three candidates have secured valid nominations. Alongside former Bangladesh captain Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Moin Uddin Chowdhury from Lakshmipur and Shariful Islam from Feni are also contesting. As a result, the final outcome will be decided through voting.

Meanwhile, several candidates are on course to become directors unopposed in different divisions. From Dhaka division, Syed Bin Zaman and Abdullah Al Fuad are set to be elected without contest. In Sylhet division, Abdul Ayub Chowdhury is likely to secure the post uncontested, while Mir Shakhrul Simanta and Mirza Faisal Amin are expected to be elected from Rajshahi and Rangpur regions respectively. However, elections will still take place in Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

The club representatives’ category appears to be the most competitive section of the election. Twelve directors will be elected by councilors from 76 clubs in Dhaka metropolitan. The candidate list includes Fahim Sinha of Abahani, Masuduzzaman of Mohammedan, Lutfur Rahman of Legends of Rupganj, Asif Rabbani of Shinepukur Cricket Club, Faiazur Rahman of Uttara Cricket Club, and Yasir Mohammad Faisal of Dhanmondi Club, among several other well-known organizers.

In Category-3, where one director is supposed to be elected from former cricketers and councilors of various organizations, there will be no contest. Chattogram University councilor Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir is set to become a BCB director unopposed.

The BCB election is scheduled to be held on June 7. In the first phase, 23 directors will be elected through votes cast by the councilors. Later, the National Sports Council will nominate two more directors. The newly formed 25-member board will then elect the next president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board from among themselves.
