Steve Smith is ready to join the Australian squad ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday. The experienced batsman has been granted clearance to join the team in Dubai before the Sri Lanka tour.
Smith, who is now fully recovered from his injury, will be available for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. Due to regular captain Pat Cummins stepping down for personal reasons, Smith will take on the captaincy for the series. However, during his Big Bash League campaign, Smith sustained an injury to his right elbow, which led to speculation about his participation in the series.
Selectors have now confirmed that Smith is fit to play, putting the rumors to rest. The first Test will begin on January 29, with the second Test scheduled for February 6. Both matches will take place in Galle.
To rejoin the Test squad, Smith underwent a specialist medical assessment and has been granted permission to travel to Dubai to begin preparations for the two-match series.
With Pat Cummins on paternity leave, Smith is expected to lead Australia during the Test series against Sri Lanka.
