Australian cricket star Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. The 35-year-old batsman played his last ODI in the semifinal of the Champions Trophy against India. Despite scoring a crucial 73 runs in the Dubai semifinal, Smith could not guide his team to victory.

Smith has played a total of 170 ODIs, amassing 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96. His record includes 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. His highest score in an ODI came in 2016 against New Zealand, where he made 164 runs. Initially part of the team as a leg-spinner, Smith has also taken 28 wickets and has held 90 catches during his career.

After Australia’s defeat to India in the semifinal, Smith shared his decision with teammates in the dressing room. While he is retiring from ODIs, Smith confirmed he will continue playing Test and T20 cricket. Smith said, “It has been an incredible journey, and I have enjoyed every moment. Winning two World Cups was an extraordinary experience, and I feel proud to have played with such fantastic teammates.”

He added, “Now, as we prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup, I believe it’s the right time to make space for others. However, Test cricket remains my top priority, and I’m excited about the upcoming World Test Championship final and the important series ahead.”

Smith was part of both the 2015 and 2023 World Cup-winning Australian teams. After Michael Clarke, Smith took over as the captain of the ODI team and led in 64 matches, with 32 wins and 28 losses. During the current Champions Trophy, he served as the interim captain in the absence of Pat Cummins.

Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, respected Smith’s decision, stating, “We fully support Steve’s decision. His batting statistics are remarkable, and by winning two World Cups, he has cemented his legacy. He remains a vital member and leader of the Test team.”

Although retiring from ODIs, Smith's focus will now be on giving his best in Test and T20 formats.
