South Africa Take Series Lead with 67-Run Win over Australia

South Africa defeated Australia by a convincing 67-run margin in the first ODI of the three-match series in Durban. After winning the toss, Australia captain and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh invited the hosts to bat first. Powered by a brilliant century from Matthew Breetzke and a blistering half-century from Marco Jansen, the Proteas posted a formidable 297 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Chasing 298, Australia were bowled out for 230 in 41.2 overs as Keshav Maharaj’s spin proved too much for the visitors.

South Africa got off to a poor start after being put into bat. Their two opening batters, Tony de Zorzi (0) and Quinton de Kock (7), returned to the pavilion with just 29 runs on the board. Captain Temba Bavuma (32) and Matthew Breetzke then steadied the innings with a crucial partnership for the third wicket. However, the real momentum shift came in the latter stages of the innings. Breetzke produced a magnificent 112 off 106 balls, including 14 fours and two sixes, at a strike rate of 105.66. He was brilliantly supported by Marco Jansen, who smashed an unbeaten 75 off just 59 balls, with six fours and four massive sixes. Their contributions helped South Africa finish with 297 runs from their 50 overs.

For Australia, pacer Nathan Ellis claimed three wickets for 57 runs, while Adam Zampa took two wickets for 50 runs.

Australia’s openers made an aggressive start in the chase. Captain Mitchell Marsh smashed 60 off just 36 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, while Travis Head scored 35 off 38 balls as the opening pair added 90 runs to the scoreboard. However, once spinners Bjorn Fortuin and, in particular, Keshav Maharaj came into the attack, Australia’s batting lineup collapsed like a house of cards. Cooper Connolly’s 38 and Matt Renshaw’s 37 could do little more than reduce the margin of defeat.

South Africa’s spin wizard Keshav Maharaj completely dismantled Australia’s middle order. He claimed four crucial wickets for just 20 runs in 9.2 overs. Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin also took two wickets for 36 runs, while all-rounder Marco Jansen picked up two wickets for 68 runs to seal a comprehensive victory for South Africa.
