India's current captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, officially drawing the curtain on his career in the game's longest format.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the 38-year-old wrote, “I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from Test cricket.”
“It has been an absolute honour to represent India in the whites. I’m grateful for the love and support I’ve received over the years. I will continue to play for India in the ODI format,” he added.
Rohit took over as India’s Test captain in 2022 and led the team in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia.
His decision comes in the wake of a disappointing personal performance in a recent five-Test series against Australia. Rohit featured in three matches but managed to score only 31 runs in total.
In the final Test of the series, Rohit voluntarily stepped down from the playing XI due to poor form, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah stepping in as stand-in captain.
