Rangpur Riders Knocked Out of BPL After Fifth Straight Loss, Khulna Tigers Storm Into Qualifier

Rangpur Riders’ BPL 2025 campaign ended in disappointment as they suffered their fifth consecutive defeat. Nurul Hasan Sohan’s Khulna Tigers secured a dominant 9-wicket victory in the Eliminator match, booking their place in the second Qualifier.

Rangpur had a flying start to the tournament, winning their first eight matches in a row and holding the top spot in the points table for a long time. However, a drastic collapse in form saw them drop to third place, ultimately leading to their elimination. Despite flying in overseas stars like Andre Russell, James Vince, and Tim David to Dhaka on the morning of the match, Rangpur Riders failed to turn their fortunes around.

Rangpur’s Batting Collapse: The Lowest Playoff Total in BPL History

Andre Russell, James Vince, and Tim David arrived in Bangladesh in the morning and were in the playing XI by noon. Khulna Tigers also had a similar scenario, with West Indies stars Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder making their debuts for the side.

However, James Vince had a disappointing outing as he managed to score only 1 run off 7 balls before falling to Nasum Ahmed. His opening partner, Soumya Sarkar, was dismissed for a duck. Rangpur’s innings never recovered, as they were bundled out for just 85 runs— the lowest total in BPL playoff history.

Khulna needed only 86 runs in 120 balls to secure victory. Though Mehidy Hasan Miraz was bowled for a duck by Akif Javed, Mohammad Naim and Alex Ross ensured an easy chase. Khulna raced to 51 runs in the powerplay, leaving only 35 runs to get in the remaining 14 overs.

Without any further hiccups, Naim and Ross comfortably took their team to victory with 58 balls to spare. Naim remained unbeaten on 48, while Ross scored 29 off 27 balls.

Rangpur’s Powerplay Nightmare & Spin Dominance by Khulna

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Rangpur Riders had a disastrous start. They lost five wickets within the powerplay, scoring just 19 runs—the lowest powerplay total in BPL 2025. Nasum Ahmed dismissed Tim David for just 7 runs off 9 balls, while Andre Russell also failed to deliver, scoring only 4 before being bowled by Mohammad Nawaz.

Only two Rangpur batters—captain Nurul Hasan Sohan and tail-ender Akif Javed—managed to reach double digits. Akif Javed top-scored with 32 off 18 balls, but his effort was in vain.

Khulna’s spin duo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nasum Ahmed, completely dismantled Rangpur’s batting lineup. Miraz claimed 3 wickets for just 10 runs in 4 overs, while Nasum also took 3 wickets, conceding only 16 runs in his spell, which included a maiden over.

Rangpur Riders were bowled out in just 16.5 overs for 85 runs, marking a disappointing end to their once-promising campaign.
