Kanpur Test Set to Proceed Amid Security Concerns
The upcoming second Test between Bangladesh and India in Kanpur has faced security apprehensions, particularly following threats from a group called Hindu Mahasabha in response to alleged persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. However, these concerns have been addressed, and the match will take place as scheduled.
Both teams arrived in Kanpur on Tuesday and were greeted by enthusiastic fans lining the streets. The Bangladesh team held a practice session at Green Park, where strict security measures were in place.
Kanpur Police Commissioner Harish Chandra confirmed that the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) is responsible for providing a three-tier security system for the teams traveling from their hotel to the stadium. He stated, "The police are vigilant regarding the situation in Bangladesh. We have implemented robust security measures for this match. We are also gathering information from intelligence agencies. If anyone attempts to protest, we will take action as per the law."
The Commissioner emphasized, "We are reviewing security arrangements to ensure there are no gaps. We expect to have adequate police force available as needed."
In a press conference before the match, Bangladesh's head coach Chandika Hathurusingha expressed confidence in the security arrangements, saying, "We trust the BCCI regarding security. We are not worried."
After losing the first Test, Bangladesh finds itself trailing 1-0 in the series, making the upcoming match crucial for them to level the series. The second and final Test will commence on September 27 in Kanpur.
