'It can happen in cricket'
Once again, the dreams of the Tigers were shattered. Bangladesh came tantalizingly close but fell short against South Africa. Despite having the lowest target in T20 World Cup history, they could not secure the win. After restricting the Proteas to just 113 runs, Bangladesh managed to score only 109, marking their ninth consecutive T20 defeat against South Africa. Post-match, Bangladesh captain expressed his disappointment but praised the bowlers, especially Tanzim Sakib and leg-spinner Rishad.
Mahmudullah Riyad once again took on the responsibility to finish the match for his country but was unfortunate to be caught at the boundary on the fifth ball of the 20th over. A few inches would have made the difference; if the ball had gone for a six instead of being caught by Markram, Bangladesh would have won by 4 wickets. Instead, they faced a narrow defeat by 4 runs.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, captain Shanto admitted to being a bit nervous. He acknowledged that they should have won but accepted the situation gracefully, saying, "Cricket can be like this." To Shanto, such a close loss to South Africa was not unexpected.
"We were a bit nervous but confident that we could chase the target, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Tanzim Sakib has worked hard over the past few days; we wanted wickets with the new ball, and he showed his character today. We should have won this match, but in the last few overs, they bowled really well. This can happen in cricket."
"He has been bowling superbly in the last few series and works hard even in practice. We've lacked a leg-spinner for 10-15 years. I hope he can maintain his form. Thanks to all the fans and supporters who came to the New York stadium, and I hope they will be there in the West Indies too."
