In the lead-up to the fifth Test against India in Sydney, Australia has been hit with an injury blow. Josh Inglis, the backup wicketkeeper, sustained an injury while fielding as a substitute during the fourth Test in Melbourne. As a result, the wicketkeeper-batter has been ruled out of the remainder of the series.
Inglis had been kept as a backup wicketkeeper for the final Test of the series against India due to regular keeper Alex Carey being unavailable for some reason. Cricket Australia confirmed that the 29-year-old Inglis would be omitted from the final squad for the Sydney Test.
A spokesperson for Cricket Australia announced that Inglis' replacement would be named ahead of the fifth Test, which is set to begin on January 3. The statement read, "Josh Inglis sustained an injury while fielding as a substitute on day two of the fourth Test against India, and he will now be withdrawn from the squad for rehabilitation."
The statement further mentioned, "A replacement player will be announced in due course for the fifth Test match in Sydney. Inglis' status will be reassessed in time for Australia's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka."
Although Inglis is yet to make his Test debut, he has already represented Australia in over 50 white-ball matches. Last year, he was an integral part of Australia's victorious squad in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India.
