India secured a 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series after defeating England by four wickets in the second ODI. Chasing a target of 305 set by England, the hosts reached the target in 44.3 overs with four wickets in hand.
After winning the toss on Sunday, England captain Jos Buttler chose to bat first. The English openers got off to a flying start, scoring 75 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket. However, Phil Salt departed after scoring 26 runs once the powerplay ended. The other opener, Ben Duckett, notched a half-century, scoring 65 runs off 56 balls before being dismissed.
At number three, Joe Root played the highest innings for England, scoring 69 runs off 72 balls. Jos Buttler (34) and Liam Livingstone (41) provided quick runs, but none of the batters could convert their starts into a big score. In the end, disciplined Indian bowling restricted England to 304 runs, as they were bowled out with one ball remaining.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 35 runs in his 10-over spell.
Chasing 305, India’s openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a solid start, putting on a 134-run stand in 100 balls. Gill scored 60 runs off 52 balls before getting dismissed. Rohit, who had been waiting for a century for a long time, finally reached the milestone. He smashed 12 fours and 7 sixes, scoring 119 runs off just 90 balls before getting out.
Virat Kohli’s poor form continued as he managed only 5 runs before falling to Adil Rashid. Shreyas Iyer contributed 44 runs before getting run out. Axar Patel ensured India’s victory despite wickets falling at the other end. He remained unbeaten on 41 off 43 balls and guided India to victory.
For England, Jamie Overton picked up two wickets. Rohit Sharma was named the Player of the Match for his match-winning century.
