Glenn Maxwell Announces Shock Retirement from ODI Cricket

Australia’s dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his sudden retirement from One Day Internationals, expressing a desire to fully prepare himself for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. The 36-year-old has decided to step away from 50-over cricket to focus solely on the shortest format.

Maxwell was a member of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup-winning teams. Over a decade-long ODI career that began in 2012, he played 149 ODIs, scoring 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81, including four centuries and 23 fifties. He also took 77 wickets with his off-spin.

Maxwell’s unforgettable 201 against Afghanistan* in the 2023 World Cup is widely regarded as one of the greatest innings in ODI history. Chasing a target of 293, Australia was reeling at 91/7 with captain Pat Cummins at the other end. Battling extreme heat and severe cramps, Maxwell produced a heroic knock, scoring an unbeaten double century off 128 balls to guide Australia to a miraculous victory.

Later, in the World Cup final, Maxwell hit the winning runs as Australia defeated India to clinch their sixth World Cup title.
