England Seal Series Win Over Sri Lanka with One Match to Spare

Powered by Tom Banton’s blistering half-century and disciplined bowling from their attack, England comfortably defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second T20I. With this victory, the hosts sealed the three-match T20I series 2-0 with one match still remaining. Chasing a target of 146, England reached the winning mark for the loss of four wickets in just 12.1 overs.

After losing the toss, Sri Lanka made a flying start with openers Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Udara putting together a rapid 50-run partnership in just 4.3 overs. However, Liam Dawson broke the dangerous stand by dismissing Udara for 21.

Dawson was followed by Jamie Overton, who removed Nissanka after the opener had scored 37. Captain Charith Asalanka tried to steady the innings with a 31-run knock, but Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals against England’s disciplined bowling.

Wanindu Hasaranga was the only other Sri Lankan batter to make a significant contribution, scoring 27. The visitors’ innings collapsed dramatically in the final three overs, when they lost four wickets for just seven runs. Liam Dawson claimed three wickets for England, while Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer picked up two wickets apiece, restricting Sri Lanka to 145 all out in 20 overs.

Chasing the modest target, England’s batters attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers from the very beginning. Opener Aneurin Donald departed after scoring 21 off 13 balls, while captain Jos Buttler played a quick cameo of 30 off 16 balls. During his innings, Buttler reached the remarkable milestone of 15,000 runs in T20 cricket.

Harry Brook then added a brief burst of power, smashing 23 runs off just eight balls, including three sixes.

However, it was middle-order batter Tom Banton who stole the spotlight. He tore into the Sri Lankan bowling attack with a barrage of boundaries, smashing an unbeaten 52 off just 24 balls, including two fours and four sixes. Along with Jordan Cox, who contributed 11 off five balls, and a quick-fire contribution from Will Jacks, Banton helped England reach the target with 47 balls to spare.

For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Eshan Malinga and Wanindu Hasaranga took one wicket each, but their efforts were not enough to prevent a comprehensive defeat. Tom Banton was named Player of the Match for his explosive unbeaten half-century.
