Ellis and Davis Ruled Out Ahead of Series-Deciding ODI

Australia have suffered a major blow ahead of the third and final ODI of their ongoing series against South Africa. In-form fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the final match due to a side strain. Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Joel Davis has also been ruled out of the tour after sustaining a hamstring injury while serving as a substitute fielder during the second ODI.

Ellis, who has bowled impressively throughout the tour, suffered the side strain after bowling just four overs in the second ODI in Johannesburg and was forced to leave the field. In his absence, South Africa scored 365 in the second match to seal the series 2-0. The pacer will return home for a full scan and rehabilitation. He is expected to recover in time for Australia’s ODI series against England, which begins at home on November 13. Billy Stanlake had previously suffered a similar injury during the tour of Zimbabwe.

Australia now have only four fit fast bowlers available for Wednesday’s final match. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, who were rested for the first two games, are strong candidates to return to the playing XI. Meanwhile, Josh Hazlewood, who has played both matches in succession, could be rested, with Xavier Bartlett potentially retaining his place in the team. Despite being included in the squad as the second spinner, Joel Davis is returning home without playing a single match. He will begin rehabilitation with the aim of returning to domestic cricket for New South Wales.

Josh Inglis, who fractured his finger in the first ODI of the series, is still awaiting a decision on whether he will be available for the Test series beginning on October 9. However, South Africa have not added any new players to their squad.
