The first Super Over of the 2024 T20 World Cup took place in the match between Namibia and Oman. This was the first match to go to a Super Over since the 2012 World Cup. However, Namibia had the last laugh, thanks to David Wiese's all-round brilliance. Before reaching the Super Over, the match had several thrilling moments. Wiese's exceptional performance with both bat and ball earned him the Player of the Match award.
David Wiese, the hero of Namibia's Super Over, scored 13 runs off 4 balls, setting a target of 22 runs for Oman. In the subsequent bowling, he restricted Oman to just 10 runs, taking one wicket. In the regular match before the Super Over, Wiese had already claimed 3 wickets, making him the clear choice for the Player of the Match award.
Oman, after losing the toss, were bowled out for 109 runs in 20 overs. In the first over of their innings, Oman lost two wickets in the first two deliveries. Opener Prajapati and captain Aqib Ilyas, who came in at number three, were both dismissed by Ruben Trumpelmann, with Ilyas going out for a golden duck. Trumpelmann claimed another wicket in his next over.
Oman continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, struggling to build any significant partnerships. David Wiese contributed significantly to Oman's downfall by taking three wickets. On the field in Barbados, only four of Oman's eleven batsmen reached double digits. Khalid Kail top-scored with 34 runs, while the second-highest scorer, Zeeshan Maqsood, managed 22 runs.
Namibia, chasing a modest target, faced early setbacks as well. Opener Michael van Lingen was bowled for a duck by Bilal Khan. However, Nicholas Davin and Jan Frylinck steadied the innings with a 42-run partnership. Davin was dismissed for 24 runs, but Frylinck continued to play a steady and reliable innings. Captain Erasmus added 13 runs before being dismissed.
Namibia was on the brink of a straightforward victory, needing only 5 runs from the last 6 balls, with Frylinck on 45 runs. However, in a dramatic turn, Frylinck was stumped on the first ball of Mehran Khan's over. New batter Jan Green faced a dot ball and was trapped leg-before on the next delivery, failing to overturn the decision even with a review. With three balls remaining, Namibia needed 5 runs. Kruger took a single to give Wiese the strike. Wiese managed to score 2 runs on the fifth ball, leaving 2 runs needed off the last ball. He failed to hit the ball cleanly, managing only a single, which resulted in the match being tied.
