All-Rounder Marcus Stoinis Leads Australia to Victory over Oman
Australia has begun their T20 World Cup campaign with a victory. By defeating Oman by 39 runs, Australia has taken the top spot in Group B, displacing Namibia. On the other hand, with two consecutive losses, Oman is almost certainly out of the World Cup.
The outcome was predictable even before the match started. Australia entered the field as clear favorites against Oman. However, the Aussies struggled to score runs.
Ultimately, the Australian scoreboard was enriched by the batting performances of Warner and Stoinis. They scored 164 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Oman was restricted to 125 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. As a result, the former world champions started their World Cup journey with a 39-run victory.
On Thursday at 6:30 AM Bangladesh time, Oman’s captain Aqib Ilyas won the toss and invited Australia to bat first at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.
Starting cautiously, Australian openers David Warner and Travis Head played carefully. However, in an attempt to play aggressively, Travis Head was dismissed for 12 runs. Later, Mitchell Marsh and Warner settled at the crease but were held back by Oman's bowlers. The Aussie batters struggled to score freely.
Australia took 48 balls to reach their team score of 50 runs. After Marsh’s departure, Glenn Maxwell was dismissed without scoring. Then, Marcus Stoinis joined Warner at the crease. Stoinis entertained the crowd with a series of boundaries and over-boundaries.
Stoinis reached his fifty in just 27 balls, while Warner took 46 balls to reach his fifty. Together, Warner and Stoinis built a partnership of 100 runs for the fourth wicket. The partnership was broken when Warner was dismissed for 56 runs. Tim David then played a brief cameo, scoring 9 runs off 4 balls, bringing Australia’s total to 164 runs in 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 165 runs, Oman did not have a good start. They lost their first wicket at the team score of 6 runs. Captain Aqib Ilyas, along with Kashyap Prajapati, took the team forward in the second wicket partnership.
Oman lost their second wicket with the team score at 23 runs when Prajapati was dismissed. Oman continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were eventually restricted to 125 runs. Ayan Khan was the top scorer with 36 runs. Marcus Stoinis took the highest 3 wickets for Australia.
For his all-round performance, Stoinis was awarded the Man of the Match.
