Aiden Markram: Unbeaten as Captain in ICC Events
Aiden Markram seems to be a blessing for South Africa. He is the first Proteas captain to lead his team to a World Cup final. If he can steer South Africa to victory over India in the T20 World Cup final, he will not only savor senior cricket’s World Cup glory but also maintain his undefeated streak as a captain in ICC events.
South Africa’s Unbeaten Journey in the 2024 T20 World Cup
South Africa's journey in the 2024 T20 World Cup has been remarkable so far. They have played 9 matches without losing any. Among their victories are wins against three former champions—Sri Lanka, England, and the West Indies. In the semifinals, Markram's team comprehensively defeated Afghanistan by 9 wickets.
Markram’s Perfect Record as ICC Event Captain
Winning every match as an ICC event captain is nothing new for Aiden Markram. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, he led South Africa in two matches against England and Bangladesh in the absence of Temba Bavuma. South Africa triumphed in those matches by 229 and 149 runs, respectively.
In 2014, Markram captained South Africa's U-19 team to victory in the ICC U-19 World Cup. Under his leadership, the team won all 6 of their matches, securing their only ICC title besides the 1998 KnockOut Trophy.
Success Beyond National Team
Markram's achievements as a captain are not limited to the national team. He led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to back-to-back titles in the first two seasons of the SA20 franchise league. However, Proteas supporters will be hoping for more than franchise success—they are eager for their first senior World Cup title (excluding the U-19 title), and a victory over India could fulfill that dream.
