Seven Former Australian Captains Write for Imran Khans Proper Medical Treatment

Seven former Australian cricket captains have expressed deep concern over the physical condition and human rights of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan. Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh have jointly written a letter to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

In the letter, they stated that their appeal was not being made from any political or diplomatic standpoint, but solely out of a sense of humanitarian responsibility as former cricket captains.

The former cricket stars made it clear that they were not expressing any opinion on the legal or political cases against Imran Khan, as those matters are entirely internal affairs of Pakistan. However, regardless of political circumstances, they stressed that every person in detention has a fundamental right to receive proper medical treatment and be treated humanely.

Imran Khan’s family has long expressed concern over his physical condition, particularly the vision problems affecting his right eye. Chappell had also requested a meeting with the foreign minister to discuss the matter, but has yet to receive a response.

This is not the first time members of the international cricket community have spoken out in support of medical treatment for Imran Khan. Earlier, on August 23, 22 former international captains wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging him to establish an independent medical board for Imran in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives, ensure regular meetings with his family, and provide him with the necessary medical care. Several prominent cricketers, including Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Moin Khan and current Australia captain Pat Cummins, have already expressed their solidarity with Imran Khan on the issue.
