Pakistan Fined 50 of Match Fees and Deducted 11 World Test Championship Points

Pakistan have been penalized for maintaining a slow over rate during the third Test of their series against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. For breaching the minimum over-rate requirements, the Pakistan players have been fined 50 percent of their match fees, while the team has also been deducted 11 points from the ICC World Test Championship standings.

According to ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, Pakistan were 11 overs short of the required over rate even after the time allowance had been taken into account.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to complete within the stipulated time, with the maximum penalty capped at 50 percent. As Pakistan were 11 overs short, the maximum 50 percent fine was imposed on the team.

Meanwhile, under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions, teams are penalized with a deduction of one championship point for every over they fall short. Accordingly, 11 points have been deducted from Pakistan’s total tally.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam admitted the offence and accepted the proposed sanction. As a result, no formal hearing was required in the matter.

On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Paleker, and fourth umpire Russell Warren brought the charge against Pakistan.
