South Africa further strengthened their position in the race for the semifinals with a dominant performance in the Super Eight stage, defeating the West Indies by nine wickets. After winning the toss at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Proteas chose to field first and maintained control of the contest from the outset.
Despite an early setback, the West Indies managed to post 176 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Romario Shepherd played a composed unbeaten knock of 52 runs toward the end of the innings, while experienced all-rounder Jason Holder contributed a valuable 49. However, the Caribbean side failed to accelerate significantly in the closing overs against South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack.
Lungi Ngidi was the standout performer with the ball for South Africa, claiming three wickets. Kagiso Rabada added two more with his pace, and Corbin Bosch also picked up a pair of wickets to keep the pressure on. Regular breakthroughs prevented the West Indies from building a more imposing total.
Chasing 177, South Africa began aggressively through Quinton de Kock and captain Aiden Markram. The opening pair put together a 95-run partnership that effectively put the game beyond reach. De Kock struck a rapid 47 off 24 deliveries, including four boundaries and four sixes. After his dismissal, Markram anchored the chase with an unbeaten 82, while Ryan Rickelton supported him with an unbeaten 45. South Africa sealed the victory with 23 balls remaining.
With this win, South Africa consolidated their position at the top of the Super Eight standings. For the West Indies, the defeat comes as a significant setback, leaving them needing not only victories in their remaining matches but also a strong net run rate to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
