Zimbabwe Reach Super Eight, Australia Eliminated

Zimbabwe have secured a place in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup after their match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain.

Following victories over Oman and Australia, Zimbabwe needed just one point to qualify for the Super Eight. However, persistent rain in Pallekele led to the match being called off before it could start.

The game was officially abandoned two and a half hours after the scheduled start. As a result, Australia’s exit from the tournament was also confirmed, as their defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday night had left them with just two points.

Before the match, blue covers were laid over the entire Pallekele pitch and ground. Although the rain was not heavy, the continuous drizzle prevented the game from starting.

In the Super Eight, Zimbabwe will play in a group alongside India, West Indies, and South Africa. The top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Ireland, who also had a slim chance of qualifying, will exit the tournament like Australia. This marks the first time Zimbabwe have reached the Super Eight stage of a World Cup.
