Bangladesh Suffer Heavy Defeat Against West Indies After Dropping Multiple Catches in Mirpur

Bangladesh’s plan to exploit the familiar turn and uneven bounce of the Mirpur pitch to trouble their opponents ultimately backfired. Instead, the hosts found themselves trapped in their own web as the visiting spinners dominated their batting lineup. Following a dismal batting display against the opposition’s spin attack, Bangladesh’s bowlers also failed to make an impact. As a result, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side suffered a heavy eight-wicket defeat against the West Indies in the first Test of the series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

Despite interruptions caused by bad light, drizzle and multiple instances of lightning, Bangladesh failed to stop the visitors from securing victory. The match reached its conclusion on the fourth day, well ahead of the scheduled finish. Chasing a relatively challenging target of 170 runs, the Caribbean side took control of the contest through a commanding opening partnership. Openers Brandon King and John Campbell laid the foundation for victory with a century stand. King eventually guided his team across the finish line with a responsible unbeaten innings of 81.

Although Bangladesh managed to create a few opportunities early in the chase, the hosts failed to capitalise on them. The aggressive approach of the Caribbean batters left Bangladesh’s three specialist spinners completely ineffective. With no breakthrough coming in the first 21 overs, the captain was forced to turn to his pace bowlers. Shoriful Islam immediately delivered a breakthrough, bowling John Campbell for 49.

Another pacer, Hasan Mahmud, then sent Tagenarine Chanderpaul back to the pavilion. However, Bangladesh paid dearly for their missed opportunities in the field. Captain Shanto dropped a catch at slip, while substitute fielder Ebadot Hossain failed to hold on to another chance near the boundary, both off Brandon King. Those missed chances made the visitors’ task even easier. Towards the end, Kavem Hodge remained unbeaten on 31 to seal the victory.

However, the real heroes of the contest were the Caribbean spin duo. Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican were primarily responsible for dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup. In the second innings, Chase claimed five wickets for just 36 runs, while Warrican picked up four for 63. With an outstanding display of spin bowling throughout the match, Warrican finished with a total of nine wickets.

While the visiting spinners wreaked havoc on the same surface, Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained largely ineffective. The hosts’ spinners failed to take a single wicket in the visitors’ second innings, a factor that ultimately made a significant difference to the outcome of the match.
