Mithun Responds with the Bat Amid Chants from the Stands
At one stage in Rajshahi, the spotlight shifted from the contest on the field to the noise coming from the gallery. In the middle of his innings, Mohammad Mithun suddenly paused and walked toward the boundary rope. It was evident that something shouted from the stands had caught his attention. His reaction was not directed at the opposition, but toward the spectators.
The incident took place during the Bangladesh Cricket League match between South Zone and North Zone at the Rajshahi Divisional Stadium. Batting for South Zone after they were sent in, Mithun briefly stepped away from the crease and moved toward the boundary line. Chants of “dalal” could be heard echoing from the gallery. He was seen speaking to the crowd, possibly asking why such remarks were being directed at him. After a short exchange, however, the right-handed batter returned to the crease with a smile.
The crowd’s reaction appears to be linked to a recent controversy. In January, the Bangladesh Premier League was suspended for a day following a contentious comment made by BCB director M Nazmul Islam. As president of the cricketers’ association (COAB), Mithun led a temporary boycott decision that included Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Since that episode, both Mithun and Miraz have faced criticism from sections of supporters at various venues. The Rajshahi match proved no exception. Notably, Miraz encountered a similar situation during the last BPL as well.
Despite the circumstances and his team’s struggles, Mithun held firm with the bat. Facing 79 deliveries, he remained unbeaten on 55 runs, providing one of the few bright spots in an otherwise difficult innings for his side.
