With the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka just around the corner, the Bangladesh national cricket team conducted an intensive training session on Sunday at the Galle International Stadium. Following the session, head coach Phil Simmons addressed the media, discussing team readiness, player conditions, and strategic plans.

One key absence from the day’s training was all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who is currently recovering from a fever. However, Simmons expressed optimism about his condition.

"Miraz has a fever, but he looked slightly better today compared to the last few days," said the coach. "He’s under medical care, and we’re hopeful he’ll return to training tomorrow."

While hopeful, Simmons didn’t shy away from acknowledging the potential setback if Miraz is unavailable for the first Test.

"Of course, missing a player like Miraz is a concern. But that also opens up opportunities for others. Everyone’s hoping he recovers in time, but if he doesn’t play, the rest will have to step up."

Regarding team composition for the Galle Test, Simmons said no final decision has been made yet on the playing XI, particularly on the spin-pace balance — a crucial factor in subcontinental conditions.

"We haven’t finalized whether it’ll be three pacers and two spinners or something else. We'll decide after assessing the pitch."

When asked if newly-appointed Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto would open the innings, Simmons brushed off the question with a smile:

“Next question…”

However, he did share his thoughts on Shanto's leadership and its potential impact on his batting.

"I don’t think the captaincy will affect his game. Once he’s on the field, his focus will be on playing good cricket."

Speaking about veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim, Simmons emphasized the importance of enjoyment and experience:

"I just want Mushfiq to enjoy his cricket. He has done well here before, and I hope he can do it again."

On young pacer Nahid Rana, Simmons was upbeat:

"He’s improving every day. Working with Shaun Tait will help him grow even more. I believe he has a bright future."

With key players being monitored and final strategies still in development, all eyes are now on the Tigers as they prepare to begin their World Test Championship campaign against Sri Lanka in Galle.
