For Rohit Sharma, Test cricket has always been a test of patience, focus, and meticulous preparation. One of India’s most successful batters recently opened up about how challenging Test cricket is, both mentally and physically. Known for his aggressive batting in limited-overs formats, Rohit has also proved his mettle in the longest format of the game. Over time, he realized that thorough preparation is the key to consistent performance across formats.
Speaking at a CEAT-organized discussion, Rohit reflected on his experiences, challenges, and preparation routines in Test cricket.
On the challenges of Test cricket, Rohit said, “It’s a format that demands readiness, as it tests your patience and sustained focus over long periods.”
He added, “In particular, the five-day format is mentally taxing and physically exhausting. But we all grew up playing first-class cricket, which instilled the endurance required to compete at this level.”
Sharing his early competitive cricket experiences, Rohit noted, “Even club-level matches in Mumbai are two- or three-day affairs. That early exposure teaches you how to stay in the game for extended periods and adapt to different situations.”
Speaking to young cricketers, he emphasized the importance of preparation: “Not everyone understands its significance at the start of their career. When I began, cricket was mostly about fun and enjoyment. But once you progress from age-group cricket to playing alongside seniors, coaches and experienced players make you realize how crucial proper preparation is.”
He highlighted the link between preparation and discipline, saying, “When you are young, you may not grasp the importance of preparation. Over time, you learn that mental discipline is necessary to endure the game, and it starts with being well-prepared. You need a clear understanding of what to do before you step on the field.”
Rohit believes mental freshness is essential for consistent performance in Test cricket. “The longer format requires many skills, and focus is the key. High-quality performance begins with being mentally fresh,” he said.
He further explained, “Much of the work begins behind the scenes—with preparation. You must prepare yourself to be able to stay on the field for long periods.”
Rohit also stressed the importance of instant reactions during the game. “Once the game begins, you react immediately—whether it’s a pressure moment or making a batting or bowling decision. There’s no time to think; everything is reflexive. Preparation helps you manage that.”
He concluded by noting that preparation is important not only in cricket but in all aspects of life. “I’ve invested a lot of time in preparation, and I believe it’s crucial not just in cricket but in any field of life. To succeed, preparation is everything.”
