Tanzid Tamim Determined to Prove Himself on the Big Stage
Tanzid Hasan Tamim has now become a regular face at the top of the order in Bangladesh’s limited-overs cricket. His recent run of consistent performances has boosted the team’s confidence, but with the T20 World Cup approaching, the young opener is now focused on shedding the tag of underperforming in major ICC events.
The special training camp for national team batters, which began on December 6, is designed to sharpen technical and mental skills. Head coach Phil Simmons, senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin, and newly appointed batting coach Mohammad Ashraful are closely working with the batters to identify mistakes and improve specific areas. Despite being in good form, Tanzid has remained disciplined and dedicated in training. On Monday (December 8), after practice, he spoke to the media.
Admitting openly that he has yet to live up to expectations on the world stage, the young opener said, "In ICC events, as I’ve said before, I haven’t been successful. I couldn’t perform to my potential in ICC tournaments, and even in the Asia Cup, I couldn’t play according to my ability."
Although he has shown consistency in recent bilateral series, Tanzid is determined to carry that form into bigger tournaments. He said, "It really bothers me because I’ve been performing consistently in the last few series. My aim is to maintain this consistency in ICC events as well."
With the Bangladesh Premier League starting on December 26 and the T20 World Cup preparations beginning right after, time will be limited. Keeping that in mind, the BCB has arranged this special batting camp.
Sharing his experience from the camp, Tanzid said, "It’s going really well because after the BPL we won’t have much time. Such specific batting camps are rare, which makes this very positive. We’re working on identifying the extra skills we lacked in recent series and how we can improve."
He added that the team is also preparing with opponents’ strategies in mind. According to him, "We’re working on what kind of game plans opponents might have against us in the upcoming World Cup or any major event, or what plans bowlers might use for particular gaps. The coaches are repeatedly focusing on one specific area—how to play during the powerplay and how to find gaps."
