Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has announced the squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Afghanistan. Left-handed batter Ben Curran and left-arm pacer Newman Nyamhurwi have received their maiden national call-ups.
The series will be held at Harare Sports Club, featuring three T20 Internationals on December 11, 13, and 14, followed by three One-Day Internationals on December 17, 19, and 21.
The 28-year-old Ben Curran earned his spot in the team through impressive performances in domestic cricket. He is the son of the late Kevin Curran, a former Zimbabwe international cricketer and coach. Ben Curran is also the brother of England international cricketers Tom and Sam Curran.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Nyamhurwi is one of the country’s rising young talents. Earlier this year, he was Zimbabwe’s highest wicket-taker in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa, claiming eight wickets. The promising pacer has already been labeled as a “future star” by Zimbabwe Cricket.
Both Curran and Nyamhurwi have been included in the ODI squad, which also sees the return of pace bowler Victor Nyauchi. They replace Faraz Akram, Brandon Mavuta, and Clive Madande, with Madande currently recovering from a shoulder injury.
The remainder of the squad remains unchanged from the recent ODI series against Pakistan.
In the T20 squad, only two changes have been made. Nyamhurwi is joined by opener Takudzwanashe Kaitano, who awaits his T20 debut. Madande and Mavuta miss out due to injuries and team adjustments.
