Bangladesh's great bowling Sri Lanka short collection
The Bangladesh team commenced their ICC T20 World Cup campaign at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas with a commanding performance. Despite losing the toss and being sent to bowl first, Bangladesh restricted Sri Lanka to a mere 124 runs for 9 wickets. Although Shakib Al Hasan was not impactful with the ball, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain and pacer Mustafizur Rahman delivered outstanding performances with figures of 4-0-17-3 and 4-0-22-3, respectively.
Sri Lanka, after scoring 53 runs for 2 wickets in the first 6 overs of the powerplay, could only add 21 more runs in the next 4 overs while losing another wicket. They were eventually bowled out for 150 runs in their 20 overs, falling significantly short of a competitive total.
Winning the toss favored Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who opted to field first. Tanzim Hasan Sakib started the bowling attack, conceding 5 runs with a boundary in the first over. In the following over, Shakib Al Hasan conceded two boundaries.
Taskin Ahmed, returning from injury, took the ball for the third over. After conceding two fours to Kusal Mendis, Taskin bowled him out on the next ball, breaking the opening partnership of 21 runs. Shakib struggled in his second over, conceding four boundaries to Pathum Nissanka.
The introduction of Mustafizur Rahman brought immediate success for Bangladesh. He dismissed Kamindu Mendis for 4 runs on his first delivery. Sri Lanka managed 53 runs in the powerplay for the loss of 2 wickets. Nissanka, who reached 47 runs with a boundary off Mustafizur in the 8.4th over, attempted another big shot and lost his wicket, caught by Shanto at cover.
Nissanka's departure, having scored 47 runs off 28 balls with seven boundaries and a six, provided Bangladesh with a crucial breakthrough. Mustafizur claimed two wickets in consecutive overs. Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva tried to stabilize the innings but scored slowly. Asalanka was dismissed for 19 runs off 21 balls, caught by Shakib off Rishad Hossain.
Wanindu Hasaranga was dismissed for a golden duck, caught at slip by Soumya Sarkar off Rishad Hossain. Rishad's double strike left the Sri Lankan middle order in disarray. Although he missed a hat-trick, Rishad dismissed Dhananjaya de Silva, who was stumped by Liton Das after missing the line of the delivery.
Dasun Shanaka struggled from the beginning and was dismissed for 3 runs off 7 balls, caught by Liton Das off Taskin Ahmed's bouncer. Mustafizur took his third wicket, dismissing Maheesh Theekshana. He finished his spell with remarkable figures of 4-0-17-3.
In the final over, Tanzim Sakib dismissed Angelo Mathews, who scored 16 runs off 19 balls, reducing Sri Lanka to 124/9. This comprehensive bowling performance set a solid foundation for Bangladesh in their World Cup opener.
