Following the dismissal of Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed, Bangladesh went into the tea break. At that point, Liton Kumar Das was unbeaten on 82. After the break, Liton completed his century, scoring 138 runs in total. His fourth career century led Bangladesh to an unexpected lead, a remarkable turnaround from a precarious situation where a follow-on seemed imminent. Bangladesh, which had lost 6 wickets for just 26 runs, eventually reached 262 all out. Liton received a warm reception in Rawalpindi for his splendid innings.
Thanks to Liton's century, Bangladesh set a first-innings total of 262 runs. Pakistan will begin their second innings with a 12-run lead.
In the first hour of the third day’s first session, Bangladesh’s innings fell apart. Starting the day at 10 without loss, they lost 6 wickets by the time they reached 26 runs. Despite the collapse, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Liton Das put up a resilient stand against the Pakistani pacers. However, Miraz was dismissed for 78, breaking a crucial 165-run partnership. Taskin Ahmed was also dismissed shortly after.
Liton, along with his new partner Hasan Mahmud, built another vital partnership. Liton’s aggressive batting helped him achieve his long-awaited century. Before that, he and Mahmud managed to push Bangladesh’s total beyond 200.
Liton Das is now the first batter to score three centuries while batting at number 5 or lower when his team’s total was below 50. He scored 114 against Pakistan in Chattogram when Bangladesh was at 49/4, and 141 against Sri Lanka in Mirpur when the team was at 24/5. This century is Liton’s fourth in Test cricket.
