India making it 7-1 against Pakistan
India emerged victorious in another thrilling encounter against their arch-rivals Pakistan. The match, which seemed to be in Pakistan's grasp, ended in heartbreak for them as they lost by 6 runs, marking their second consecutive defeat and a likely exit from the World Cup.
Chasing a modest target of 120 runs in 120 balls, Pakistan managed 57 runs for 3 wickets in the first 10 overs, keeping the game within their reach. However, the Pakistani batters failed to capitalize on the favorable situation and fell short of the target, losing the match by a narrow margin.
On Sunday, India won the toss and opted to bat first, getting all out for 119 runs in 19 overs in a rain-interrupted match. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were dismissed early. However, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel managed to stabilize the innings, taking India to 81 for 3 in 10 overs. It seemed India was set for a substantial total, but Pakistani bowlers turned the tide.
India lost their last 6 wickets for just 24 runs, ending their innings at 119 with an over to spare. Pakistan's pace attack was commendable, with Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf claiming 3 wickets each, Mohammad Amir taking 2, and Shaheen Afridi grabbing 1 wicket.
Pakistan’s run chase began with a setback, losing their first wicket at 26 runs when Babar Azam was dismissed for 13. Rizwan and Usman Khawaja tried to build a partnership, but Khawaja was out for 13, followed by Fakhar Zaman, who also scored 13.
At a crucial juncture, Pakistan needed 47 runs from 46 balls with 7 wickets in hand. It seemed an achievable target, but Indian bowlers put up a stellar performance. Rizwan and Shadab quickly succumbed under pressure, leading to the fall of 4 wickets in a short span, complicating the run chase for Pakistan.
With 30 runs needed from the last 3 overs, Imad Wasim and Iftikhar Ahmed were at the crease. Mohammad Siraj conceded 9 runs in the 18th over. Jasprit Bumrah's penultimate over was outstanding, giving away only 3 runs and dismissing Iftikhar on the last ball. Naseem Shah hit two boundaries in the final over but it wasn't enough to secure a win for Pakistan, and they fell short by 6 runs.
After their second consecutive defeat, Pakistan finds themselves at the bottom of Group A. India and the United States are at the top, with 4 points each.
