The West Indies secured a massive victory over South Africa by 8 wickets using the DLS method. With this win, the Caribbean team achieved a clean sweep in the three-match T20 series against the Proteas.
On Tuesday, at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Trinidad, West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bowl first. Due to rain interruptions, the match was reduced to 13 overs per side. The South African batting did not start well after losing the toss.
Proteas opener Reeza Hendricks was the first to be dismissed for 9 runs, caught out by Romario Shepherd. The powerplay yielded only 23 runs. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton formed a 42-run partnership. Markram was dismissed for 20 runs from 12 balls.
Rickelton also fell for 5 runs, with the team’s total at 66 runs. He scored 27 runs from 24 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes. Towards the end, Tristan Stubbs played a quick innings, scoring 40 runs from 15 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. At the end of the 13 overs, South Africa had posted a total of 108 runs for the loss of 4 wickets.
For West Indies, Romario Shepherd took 2 wickets for 14 runs. Akel Hosein and Matthew Ford each took 1 wicket.
Chasing a target of 109 runs, West Indies lost Allik Athanaze for 1 run at the team total of 2 runs. However, Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran provided a strong performance, putting on a 58-run partnership in just 20 balls.
Pooran was dismissed for 35 runs from 13 balls, including 2 fours and 4 sixes. In the third-wicket partnership, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer added 56 runs from 33 balls. West Indies reached their target of 109 runs in just 9.2 overs with 8 wickets remaining. Hope remained unbeaten with 42 runs from 24 balls, including 1 four and 4 sixes, while Hetmyer scored 31 runs from 17 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six.
Romario Shepherd was named the Player of the Match, and Shai Hope was named the Player of the Series.
