South Africa win by 4 runs

Before today, Bangladesh had lost all 8 of their previous T20 international matches. In New York, they almost wrote a new chapter in history. However, due to poor batting towards the end, Bangladesh lost by 4 runs. After restricting South Africa to just 113 runs, Bangladesh managed to score only 109. Mahmudullah Riyad once again took responsibility for finishing the match for his country but was unfortunately caught at the boundary right before the last ball. Towhid Hridoy displayed impressive batting yet again, but victory eluded them as Bangladesh lost by 4 runs.

Winning the toss, South Africa opted to bat first but faced a severe collapse right at the beginning. They lost 4 wickets with only 23 runs on the scoreboard, 3 of which were taken by Tanzim Hasan Sakib. David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen then steadied the innings, adding 79 runs off 79 balls. South Africa's innings eventually concluded at 113 for 6.

Bangladesh had a promising start to their chase but soon lost Tanzid Tamim. In the second over, after hitting back-to-back boundaries off Kagiso Rabada, Tamim was caught by de Kock for 9 runs. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Liton Das then worked on building the innings.

In the first 6 overs of the powerplay, South Africa managed 25 runs losing 4 wickets, while Bangladesh scored 29 for 1. Shanto and Liton proceeded cautiously, but their partnership ended at 20 runs with Liton's departure. Liton, who scored 9 runs off 13 balls, was caught by Miller off Keshav Maharaj’s first delivery. Bangladesh was 29 for 2 at this point.

Shakib Al Hasan, playing his ninth consecutive T20 World Cup, failed to find his rhythm. He has now underperformed in back-to-back matches, scoring 8 against Sri Lanka and only 3 today. Shakib was an easy catch for Markram off Anrich Nortje’s pace and bounce.

Captain Shanto, who had settled in, also fell to Nortje in a similar manner. Attempting a hook shot off a 146 km/h bouncer, Shanto was dismissed after scoring 14 runs off 23 balls, including one six. With Bangladesh at 50 for 4, they were still 64 runs away from victory. Towhid Hridoy then joined Mahmudullah Riyad at the crease.

Towhid Hridoy scored 37 runs off 34 balls before falling to a leg before wicket (LBW) trap. Despite a review, the umpire's call stood. In the final over, Bangladesh needed 11 runs to win but failed to hit any boundaries off Keshav Maharaj. Ultimately, Bangladesh lost the match by 4 runs.
