Former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach for India. This pace bowler was on the list of preferred candidates for India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir. He will join the team before the series against Bangladesh in September.
The BCCI has announced Morne Morkel’s appointment as the bowling coach in a statement. Morkel was last the pace bowling coach for Pakistan during the most recent ODI World Cup. He resigned before the end of his contract due to Pakistan's poor performance in the World Cup. Last month, Gambhir, who has recently taken over as India’s head coach, recommended Morkel for the role of bowling coach to the BCCI.
Morkel has played 86 Test matches, 117 ODIs, and 44 T20 internationals for South Africa. It is also noted that Gambhir and Morkel had a successful working relationship, having worked together with the IPL team Lucknow Super Giants.
At the age of 39, Morkel, who retired from international cricket in 2018, has considerable coaching experience. He has served as the bowling coach for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
