Bangladesh had disappointing last 2 sessions
Bangladesh has had the best session in the morning among the three sessions in the Sylhet Test so far. The next one was marked by sheer disappointment. In the final session, Nahid Rana shone with his pace, bounce, and movement. He alone dismissed two Sri Lankan batsmen. Sri Lanka lost their way by the end of their first innings, managing only 280 runs.
Bangladesh started their batting innings but lost opener Zakir Hasan early, followed by the wickets of skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mominul Haque. The welcome given to the new players at the end of the day turned out to be the last highlight of the day.
In the first innings, Sri Lanka's total of 280 runs was dominated by Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis, who contributed 204 runs together. The remaining nine batsmen could only add 65 runs. Bangladesh lost 3 wickets for just 32 runs by the end of the evening session. They could only manage to score 32 runs.
In the third over of the innings, Vishwa Fernando dismissed Zakir Hasan leg before wicket. Despite Bangladesh challenging the decision through a review, Zakir couldn't survive, getting out after facing 8 balls in just 9 balls. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also fell to a leg-before-wicket decision after scoring only 5 runs off 10 balls. Shanto reviewed the decision, but the review was unsuccessful, and he returned to the pavilion after facing just 10 balls. Sri Lankan pacers continued to trouble the Tigers' batting line-up in consecutive overs.
From the very beginning of the day, Mominul Haque seemed to be struggling. It felt like he was getting out on every ball he faced. By the end of the day, Mominul Haque was sent back by Kasun Rajitha after scoring just 5 runs. Mominul's dismissal marked Bangladesh's loss of the third wicket with only 5 runs on the board.
However, Mahmudullah Riyad and nightwatchman Taijul Islam steered Bangladesh confidently towards the end of the day's play without losing any further wickets. Bangladesh ended the day trailing by 248 runs with a total of 32 runs and no loss of wickets.
Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva caused Sri Lanka to sparkle with their partnership, adding 204 runs for the sixth wicket. Despite Nahid Hasan claiming two wickets in one over, Sri Lanka managed to score 259 runs after losing six wickets. Nahid Hasan's disciplined bowling in consecutive overs caused trouble for the Sri Lankan batting line-up. By the end of the day, Sri Lanka had lost all their wickets for 280 runs.
Nahid Hasan bowled 14 overs in the first innings, claiming 3 wickets while conceding 87 runs. Despite picking up two wickets, Mahmudullah Riyad incurred an expenditure of 87 runs in 25 overs. Prior to this, Khalid Ahmed took three wickets in the morning session.
